The 12 Steps and the Bible

The 12 Steps didn't drop out of the sky. They were shaped by early Christian recovery groups — most notably the Oxford Group — and their fingerprints are all over scripture. Here's how the classic steps line up with the Bible.

Step 1 — We admitted we were powerless

"For I know that in me… dwelleth no good thing." — Romans 7:18. Powerlessness is not a slogan. Paul preached it.

Step 2 — Came to believe a Power greater than ourselves could restore us

"For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do." — Philippians 2:13. Not a Higher Power. The living God.

Step 3 — Made a decision to turn our will and lives over to God

"Present your bodies a living sacrifice." — Romans 12:1.

Step 4 — Made a searching and fearless moral inventory

"Search me, O God, and know my heart." — Psalm 139:23-24.

Step 5 — Admitted the exact nature of our wrongs

"Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed." — James 5:16.

Step 6 — Were entirely ready for God to remove these defects

"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord." — James 4:10.

Step 7 — Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us." — 1 John 1:9.

Step 8 & 9 — Amends

"Leave there thy gift before the altar… first be reconciled to thy brother." — Matthew 5:23-24.

Step 10 — Continued to take personal inventory

"Let a man examine himself." — 1 Corinthians 11:28.

Step 11 — Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God

"Pray without ceasing." — 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

Step 12 — Carried this message to others

"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations." — Matthew 28:19. Recovery grows when it's given away.
